Waffles

No class today -- Truth and Reconciliation Day. Made some waffles for the family using new waffle iron.

Gazebo

I got Matt in for a final hour of roof building on the gazebo. This photo is just from a ladder using the wide angle mode on the phone, but it looks like a rooftop or drone shot. We hung out in it much of the day.

Moose Jaw Art Gallery

Evening at the Moose Jaw Art Gallery for opening of Jody Greenman-Barber's opening of her very cool, very evocative, and very fragile ceramics. William talked with Robin, who at last contact had told him his film would also be installed within the gallery starting tonight but was not. Seems there is serious problems with the Cine-Danse festival that she is trying to sort out while also trying to recover from covid.

Marc in town

Marc has been in town for past few days. I was working on the gazebo (almost done) and invited him to drop by after sunset. Margaret and William arrived home from Winnipeg at about the same time.

Painting day

Last week, Eddie Marshall gave me this great old camera for painting. I chose this overhead angle which has the rail seen below the bellows, creating a dark background. I found myself disappointed at needing to fill in that dark area as it looked much more interesting in the early progress version without. Perhaps I'll return to it next week.

Roofing dilemmas

We are having a difficult time cutting the roofing materials. It often gets little cracks with out various cutters. The best thing we've used has been kids scissors!

Gazebo roof begins

As Margaret and William set off for Winnipeg, Matt Ripplinger arrived and we began working on the roof for the gazebo. It is sort of a roof over top of the roof. Fingers crossed.

Polka power hour

Margaret had a work thing so William and I spent the evening watching polka on Access 7 with Fred. It was not as engaging as it sounds.

Cement, cats, lunch, orientation, and more art

Cement arrived. Later in the day, we posted guard on the soft sidewalk. When Margaret and William left it for 15 minutes, kids walked through it and drew penises (peni?). I smoothed it out and William chased them away when they returned to show off their "art".
I took mom out shopping to Costco. This cat was sitting on a car by out house. I've seen it there a few times.
This afternoon we had our student orientation. I noticed Sawboy's emblem on Ian's orange cowboy hat prop. We hadn't noticed that we'd forgotten it behind when we were shooting for Nuit Blanche.

This evening William and I went to Regina Beach for Sarah Truszkowski's talk about her food paintings. Very evocative stuff. Good snacks too, as expected. The rest of the faculty must be at Garneau's party, but by the time we got back to the city, we were too tired to go.

Back to painting

My first painting in over a month (perhaps about two). Happy to be looking inside my Bolex and working with only two tubes of paint.

Sidewalk

Yesterday the trucks arrived and sidewalk repairs took their next small step forward. Had to move William's car. They promise it will be finished by the end of the week.

Art for Teagan

William and Margaret will be heading to Winnipeg next week. William is preparing this drawing for Teagan of Hatsune Miku.

One Take Super 8 anniversary

Alex Rogalski curated a screening of 20 super 8 films which had previously been part of the One Take Super 8 Event in Regina, sometime over the past 25 years of this event. William and I both showed. It was great to revisit these films and talk with Alex and other filmmakers.

Winnipeg visitors

Visited from early afternoon until late in the evening with the ever engaging Kaldor-Mair family, in from Winnipeg for a couple of days. William gave Teagan the xmas card he'd drawn (and sealed) for her nine months ago and that we'd noticed under a pile on the table recently.

Door comes home.

George helped me bring the door home from New Dance and we've installed it against a wall with no opening.

Full day of art events

This afternoon, Babatunde Onikoyi, as part of his Phd work, hosted a conference on African Cinema. I only attended one event, which was a screening of Saskatchewan films that related in some way. One was by Dianne.

The Slate Gallery opening this evening featured Jess Richter, whom we've known and admired for years. Her work is getting more and more dense and cool.

From Slate we dashed to the Dunlop where Gary Varro presented dancer Marcus Merasty as part of Queer City Cinema.

Fire pit

We have had so few back yard fires this year, that it is necessary to document each one (this is the second or third).

Ideas develop in class

I'm teaching the fourth year film students this year. Rather than having them compete with each other over their scripts, I am having them work collaboratively, starting with the basic broad strokes such as genre and tone. There is enough competition in the world. I want them to complete this program with the hope that there are other ways to get your voice heard than the need to take away someone else's.

Lunch with mom

Mom and I had a simple lunch at a coffee shop. We were really hungry, so it tasted good. Not sure it was actually very good. Their baking is nice though.

SwampFest final day

There was a guy in who has an ongoing practice of making large inflatables. He made one at Swampfest for the kids to run around inside, or just sit and be in a private place. He was telling me about having long tubes that ran through a school one year that he and an art class installed as a surprise during class time. When the class change came, everyone discovered, a three foot cylinder snaking through the hallways and stairways. The next discovery was that it was a like a giant drum as everyone began tapping on it.

Willow Island and SwampFest

William on ferry. One of the games had his likeness on it (the Swomp Bomp). Weather was perfect. I talked to lots of people but most conversations were short. I sort of missed last year when I spent all my time reading an MFA paper, which attracted more attention than this year as I sat around looking desperate for socialization.

Swamp Fest launches, sidewalk repair begins

Swampefest opening evening parade and dance at the lake. Ticket sales are solid and everyone is excited. William will be back on the ferry as a host/guide/spokesman sort of thing, rather than at the games. I think this is overall a better fit for the festival.
Earlier today, city came and marked our sidewalk hole.

The Pit, Restored

Paul and I walked over the official re-opening of the AdHum pit today. Talked to Victor Lam, Jon Tewksbury, and President Keshen. .

William's sound

I've been working on the soundtrack for William's film. It's getting complex, which happens when you need to simplify.

BBQ corn

Picked up some tabor corn from a road side place by Moose Jaw and barbequed it up today. It was okay, but no better than the local.
